Clueless me

For years, I have always wanted to immerse myself into the gaming world but had no idea where begin or what I wanted to do.  So in 2009, I joined a website called FFXIVCore which covered a game called Final Fantasy XIV. I spent alot of time making friends with community and one day I saw a post from the owner of the site looking people to join his staff. I applied for the wiki team, better to try than never try at all.

After having a online interview with several of the admins and the owner, I was recruited to research and find news in any shape or form as long as it didn't break any terms of NDA. So for a year I did a number of community relations and researching day and night for information and getting information translated from Japanese to English.  The owner of the site, worked for Curse so once the site got popular he sold it to his company. Curse kept us on but still as volunteers. I did the best I could with the limited resources I had at my fingertips. I ended up taking over as Lead wiki/researcher and design. Later on I left due to lack of help and other reasons. However to this day I still get random people from that site adding me on Facebook or Twitter for reasons unknown but it's an awesome feeling regardless.

Awhile later one of the writers FFXIVCore sent me a link to a web magazine for SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) saying they needed writers. I was surprised because I am by no means a writer but he encouraged me to do it anyhow. I applied and ended up getting two articles published in one magazine. (The articles can be views several posts below this one.) It was a good experience but it was not for me.

After I left TORMAG, I stalled out for awhile with no clue what to do so I made up my mind this summer to re-enroll back into college and try hand at progamming, level design or possibly community relations. Wish me luck!

Passing Part 2

*Dusts off his blog and stares at the screen tries to think of what to type*

Guess I should start off what has happened since my last post. After getting the news about my Uncle, I had to find his daughter which none of us have talked to her in 8-9 years, since she is the next of kin and the funeral home would not proceed any further until we did. It was something I was not looking forward to doing since I had no idea how to get a hold of her. So I started with her mother which was not a pleasant conversation by any means since she was rather HATEFUL towards me for reasons unknown.

We finally got in touch with her and she stated she did not want to have anything to do with the funeral and she was true to her word. She didn't even show up but had us read a letter to friends and family. The memorial was nice and sadly we were unable to view the body since he had been dead for 2 whole days before he was found. He was a unique man and will be missed.

Passing....

Earlier, tonight my mother called me and asked me if I was sitting down, I replied "Yeah...why?" She said "Ken is dead..." Her Brother, my Uncle was found dead and the details are little unclear of why he died but we think it was due to kidney failure. Deputy Coroner informed us that we have to go to his house and secure the rifles and any valuables. I will update at a later time...I am tired..and have a long day ahead of me.

Lessons in reading: Part 2

If you read yesterday's blog you will get an idea what I am having to put up with. Here is the continuation of it.

GM:

Hi,

Have you tried downloading the client again ? What download did you use ?

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

(Eye twitch)

Eye Twitching Me:

Lovakat:

No offense or anything but do you NOT read anything I type? I said I downloaded it from your site and I am not the only one with this issue.

Here is the link I got it from and why bother redownloading it when LOT of other people are having this issue as well? ITS on your end that needs to be fixed not ours.

This is where I got it from.
LINK: https://secure.eveonline.com/ft/FreeTrialSignup.aspx?aid=103543

I do apologize if I seem snappy but you have had me repeat things twice. I have explained the issue..4 times on the client and 3 times on the forum. Its bound to make anyone annoyed.

GM:

Hi,

I understood that you downloaded the client from our website, however, there is different types of download. There is the online installer and the offline one. It is why I asked you which one you used.

Could you please try downloading again from: http://www.eveonline.com/download/ ?
Downloaded files can be corrupted during the download and we have no indication of a corrupted file on our side.

If you could also give me the link to the forum thread so I can have a look, it would be nice.

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

All with the same issue I do.

Just go to google and type in the following:

EVE Online valueError: too many values to unpack

and you shall see the issues and be sure to set it for the past week.

GM:

Hi,

This is an issue I wasn't aware of.
Have you tried to download this: http://cdn1.eveonline.com/client_repair/324/repair.exe as said in the forum thread ?
Have you followed the other tips in this thread ?

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

(Wonders if people understand the meaning of certain things....)

Me:

How am I going to repair something I cannot install? I have no directory for it to direct the file to or put the file in unless I put it in the

C:\ProgramData\CCP\EVE\downloads folder?

GM:

Hi,

I'm really sorry, but this is really out of my knowledge, I will move this petition into technical so a specialized GM can help you with this.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

(REALLY?)

Me:

Ok thank you for trying to help. I have also enclosed 2 pictures of my issues.

Lessons in reading...

So my curiousity got the better of me after so many years of hearing about EVE Online, I decided to download EVE Online for the free 14 day trial. Once I had it downloaded, I could not install it due to corrupt file, so I went online to find the solution which lead me to the EVE Online forums where apparently I am not alone in this matter. So I tried to reply to the post and it asks me for my account name and password. This is not a problem so I do so, but the next screen was the problem. It asks me for the character name on the account....one problem with this. I CANNOT create a character if I cannot even install the game. So I set out for support and explain to them about my issue.

Here is the replies between me and the GM.

Me:

Hello, I am trying to login to the forums so I can post MY other issue. I installed the free 14 day trial client and having issues with it. I DO NOT have a character made yet so kinda hard for me to confirm WHAT my characters name is when it does NOT exist yet!

Alot of people are having the same issue I am having with the download client so...how am I to fix my issue when I cant even login into the forums properly.

GM:

Hi,

Can you please tell us you bought the game via steam, or did you just want to use the trial ?

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

(Seriously?)

Me:

I stated I installed the free 14 day trial client so I wanted to just use the trial to test it out but apparently there is an issue with your client.

I wanted to try the game out before I buy it, but if the free client doesn't work, kinda hard to test it out don't ya think?

GM:

Hi,

Have you created the trial account at this address https://secure.eveonline.com/ft/FreeTrialSignup.aspx ? Could you please try with this one and tell me what account name you chose ?

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

ME:

Yes I have created an trial account, just cant even install the game because the client is corrupt, so therefore I cannot login and create a character.

Username: Name withheld

GM:

Hi,

I have checked the account, and everything seems to be fine. Did you get the client to work ? You should be able to log in game to create the character. Once you will have created the character, you will be able to log in on the website.

Best Regards,
GM Lovakat,
EVE Customer Support.

(bangs head on desk repeatedly)

Aggravated Me:

No I CANNOT get the client to INSTALL as I said previously which is WHY I was trying to log onto the forums to join in on a post with the people with the same problem as I have.

Forum- The issue is that it REQUESTS a name of the character on your account. I DO not have ONE made yet so therefore I cannot get onto the forums.

Client- Will not install due to corrupt installer which I downloaded directly from your site.

To be continued...I am still waiting for a reply...

Language Between Two Worlds

As the years go by, I find myself slowly losing an important part of who I am and slowly forgetting a language that was important part of my life. Sign Language. For those who are not aware, I am hard of hearing in the right ear and deaf in the left ear but if you spoke to me you would never guessed that I suffer from hearing loss at first until I utter the following words I hate saying: "Excuse me?" "Didn't hear what you said" or "Can you please repeat that?" or sometimes I just don't even bother because people get annoyed by having to repeat themselves.

Ever since I left the school for the deaf which was mainstreamed with hearing kids and as time goes by I find myself feeling very much alone because I am not around others like me. So I slowly loose the knowledge of sign language and its very frustrating because for 13 years it was a big factor in my life. Best way I can explain it is that its like losing the ability to speak. Imagine talking daily then gradually loosing your speech and then you could no longer talk. THAT is what losing the ability to read and speak sign language is like. When I do try to sign with others, I find myself sign stuttering or pausing because I cannot remember the sign.

Last night, I was watching a video that one of my friends posted and I tried so hard to follow the conversation which was in sign language and I felt like yelling at it going WHERES THE CAPTIONING, since I watch tv with captioning when people talk it helps out.

Anyhow, I am just rambling on right now and just feeling alone because I miss my friends I grew up with and signed with.

Demise of two...

Yesterday I was saddened by the news, what news you ask? The death of Peter Falk, who watched growing up on various movies and shows such as Princess Bride and Columbo.

I can still hear Peter Falk telling Fred Savage who portrayed as his grandson in the movie Princess Bride about this book that he is going to read to him.

The Grandson: A book?
Grandpa: That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I'm gonna read it to you.
The Grandson: Has it got any sports in it?
Grandpa: Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
The Grandson: Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try to stay awake.
Grandpa: Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.
From that moment on I was hooked on Princess Bride and I even went out and bought the book a short while later after seeing the movie. Peter Falk will be missed ...As you wish....and thank you for your years of entertaining us.

The other news that made me sad but was not unexpected was the future death of a game called Star Wars Galaxies which is an MMORPG. In the beginning, I was an active player of SWG and was also juggling between it and Final Fantasy XI. I was torn on which one to play so I played both for quite sometime. Off and on for several years I would take a break from the game and come back and play for extended period of time until one day...which ruined the game for me and thousands of other players.

The "New Game Enhancement" which basically was the cancer of the game and is just now finally killing off an old friend. I know it sounds sad and pathetic that I would be upset over a game but I met a lot of good people and had fun times with them but after "NGE" hit...they slowly faded away. Which made me my barely come back except maybe once or twice a year if that, just to see if there had been truly any improvements.

To this day, I often wonder where my friends are and how they are doing and for one I am thankful that I did get to play SWG because I went on a journey...in a galaxy far away from here and made friends. Dec. 15, 2011 will be a sad day but hopefully our paths will cross again in the new mmorpg.. Star Wars: The Old Republic and if you are curious about it, send me a message and maybe we can create our own new adventures together.

SWG, thank you for the memories and friendships.

Tales of Dreams and Imagination

I woke up one morning and I was only 3 feet tall and was confused by my surroundings so I got up and noticed I was in a countryside surrounded by Acorn huts, where am I thought to myself..then the answer came to me out of nowhere. I was in a small village of Nelwyn...

Wait a second..that wasn't me that was me playing the game Willow. A great movie and NES (Nintendo Entertainment System for you youngsters! GET OFF MY LAWN!) RPG game.

As a child I used to play this game for countless hours, enjoying the fact I was playing a game from one of my favorite movies. It took me months to beat this game, unlike the games of today, which pose hardly any challenge because the market audience wants things easier.

This game has lots of dungeons, and maze like areas which can be bit infuriating but it teaches you patience which is not any easy thing for a kid with HDD/ADD....like me. OOO shiny obj-....oh we were talking about Willow. Its a great challenging game for NES and I recommend those who have seen the movie to play it.

Controls are bit clunky and there is no jumping but has a great story line and challenges..question is...are you up for the challenge?

Updates

Sorry I have not mad any updates here lately, been busy with work..you know that dreaded W word. A lot of updates have happened since my last post, and I'm sure some of you already know about some of them but I will share with you anyhow.

Sony announced at Gamers con that on Sept 1 they will release (Already have done so) PS3 Slim for 299 dollars.

Also there have been several Final Fantasy 14 updates, way to many to post so I will share with you with what I found on MMORPG.com So sit back and enjoy the information!

Launch Info

Here is a pre-alpha look at some of the things I can confirm we will see with Final Fantasy XIV. Let's start with the biggest question I have been hearing from a lot of people. What is going to happen to Final Fantasy XI? I can confirm that Final Fantasy not only will remain supported by Square Enix, I can also tell you that a new lead developer has been hired to continue working on Final Fantasy XI. If anyone was worried about it, you can rest assured that XI will remain a focus for Square Enix.

So the second biggest question is release date and platform choices? To my surprise, Community Planner and Service Manager for Square Enix, Robert Peeler told me that Final Fantasy XIV will come out on 2010 for sure. Due to pre-alpha status, he could not give me knowledge of which quarter they are shooting for, but his tone of voice expressed much excitement for a 2010 release date. Robert was able to tell me that Final Fantasy XIV will release on PS3 and PC across ALL regions simultaneously. Square is working on a 360 release, but there is nothing confirmed right now on release for it. We all know that Microsoft runs ALL servers that live games play on, so it can be difficult at times to work out agreements for cross platform games. The expressions he gave me tell me that there will be a 360 release with no date set, but I cannot be quoted on that.

Class/Leveling

The next big question has been the class and leveling system. I wasn't able to get all my questions answered that I would have liked to, but I did get a lot of information that I think all of you will like to know for sure. Does this game have a leveling system? NO!! You will not progress through the game with a leveling system. This game is going to have a skill set system similar to games like Oblivion. It is not going to be tree based like Star Wars Galaxies was before the new experience launched with leveling. It was hard for Robert to describe the class/leveling system. He kept telling me how I would have to experience it myself to understand it. I am going to do my best to repeat some of the things that he told me, but I am still confused as I was not able to play the game myself. He basically showed me live game play that was pre-recorded.

As you use a sword, axe, staff, ect your stats will grow in each area. This is how you will gain experience. The key area is that the system is very complex. You aren't going to just gain points for each weapon, but to my understanding this is also how you will develop attributes as well. Robert couldn't go into a lot of detail on that area, but that is how I understand it. The next question is how does armor work? He couldn't explain it at all other than it is going to work similar to weapons. You will have stat requirements for each piece of armor that you find.

So are there classes in the game? Well yes of course! Like all Final Fantasy games, there will be classes/jobs. Robert didn't explain if there was a job class. His tones expressed that there is some form of job system, but the only need for the system will be to help determine what you can and cannot use. What I did find interesting though is that any character can use almost any piece of equipment in the game that they meet the requirements for. For example, a warrior can wear cloth and a mage can wear armor. The downfall though is that your stats aren't going to compliment what you are wearing, so it is going to make you weaker. This could make things interesting when people re-roll. I can see this easily turning into a way of skilling up fast, but who knows at this point.

Quest/Combat

The combat system is VERY interesting. First off, there is no auto attack of any kind (unless of course the game will allow macros). It will be a number set like most MMOS, but there are some key differences. The game is going to have an attack bar similar to other final fantasy games. After each attack, you will have a short time you will have to wait for the bar to fill back up before you can attack again. The game is going to be turn based like XI was, but the twist is that you will have two bars. Why two bars? You will be able to do a weak attack with strong accuracy and a strong attack with weak accuracy. Due to the attack bar system, you will have to plan attacks out while you are in combat. This is going to make boss battles VERY interesting. If you go for a strong attack and miss it could be fatal! Also the time of each bar is going to be different between which attacks you use. I believe it will also be shorter if you miss an attack, but most attacks I saw didn't fail.

Questing is going to be similar to most games. In the pictures I provided, you see those three crystals. That is actually where this character got quests. It's not going to be like XI where you randomly talk to people and hope they have quests for you. You are actually going to be able to get quests in the game that will help you improve your skills without spending hours trying to find them. The game will also be solo based or group based. Robert told me that this time around there is a bigger focus on solo play, but you will run into boss battles that require multiple people. If you wanted an Oblivion MMO, this game is going to be for YOU!

Zoning/Mob Levels

Now I am sure the next question is how will zoning/mob levels work? Sadly, I cannot provide much information on these two subjects. One interesting thing about zoning though is they made the game similar to Oblivion where you don't actually change zones. This game is going to have a totally free roam feel to it. My next question right after he said this was probably what you are you thinking, how are we going to know what monsters we can attack? The answer is simple; It will be just like final fantasy XI. The monsters aren't going to have levels and the game will have a similar check feature. This means that as you progress in the game, you will learn which monsters are weak and strong just like we all did with XI.

Conclusion

Let me end with just a couple of things: First off, I realize that some of my answers and explanations are vague and I apologize. I was getting a lot of vague answers to my questions simply due to a lot of information cannot be confirmed yet. On top of that, this was not a sit down interview. It was not prepared for this at all. I asked what questions I could think of and put as many notes as possible into my phone.

With the game in pre-alpha, this is a very good sign. I cannot express how much Robert was pushing a 2010 release date. I will be very upset if it is pushed to 2011 with all the excitement he had with this release date. I wish I could have gotten more details out of him, but I got as much as I could think of. I hope that I at least brought a little more insight to a lot of questions people have asked on the forums. The game play footage I got to watch was pretty cool. The game looks very similar to XI with an Oblivion feel to it, so I am sure the system requirements are going to only be bumped up a bit. One funny thing, is that anytime I made a comment about the look and feel being like Oblivion, the replies I got shrugged off any of those comments. So keep in mind that I am using that term loosely as it is the only clear way I can explain things.

I feel Derek from MMORPG summed it pretty nicely don't ya agree? Anyhow I'm off to eat before work beckons me once more... I will try to update more often!

Final Fantasy Fans Rejoice...

I'm sure this is rather old news by now but I am excited and looking forward to the next TWO Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy 13 and 14. Final Fantasy 14 is an new online mmo and I don't have much information at this time but for those people who have never played the Final Fantasy series, should give it a shot, also I will be using FF as an abbr. for Final Fantasy so that way no one is confused on what I'm talking about.

Okay, here is what I do know about FF14 that has been confirmed. I got this from a FF fansite.

Setting and Story
The story takes place in a new area known as “Eorzea” and although it does feature some monsters and classes related to Final Fantasy 11, they have been remodelled to be unique to Eorzea. The similarities however, allow Final Fantasy 11 users to be able to create characters that look comparable. New races will also be included in FF14.
Eorzea is a region in the world of Haiderin and is a world blessed with high technology. However it will not be a science fiction style world seen in FF10 or FF11 and will return to the roots of earlier Final Fantasy games.

Platforms

It has been confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 will be released on the Playstation 3 and Windows PC platforms. An XBox 360 version has not been confirmed but talks are taking place between Square Enix and Microsoft
Operating system compatibility has not been specified, with the development team merely saying it depends on what is out at the time. It has been said that they are not looking to get on the cutting edge of technology with this instalment and whilst the system requirements may be very high on release, within a few years an average system will be able to play it at maximum settings.

Ok, side note
VERY high requirements..for PC.

ok who's kidney and liver do I need to sell for a new pc?

How much do you think I can sell my fiancee and her boys for on ebay?

No.

No, no, no.

I couldn't possibly do that.

*checks ebay's terms of service*

I couldn't possibly do that.

Dammit.

But....I will take donations!!

*clears throat*

Ok on with the information.

Battle System

The FF14 development team have said that, unlike FF11, the heavy emphasis on team play has been scaled down and a more balanced solution, focusing on solo play too, has been found. It presents a significant departure from the FF11 system in that strategic elements have been added to encounters.

This implies that there will be a learning curve, but beginners can expect simpler options to allow them to edge their way into the game. Battles will no longer be real-time action-style encounters and will require a bit more thought.

Character Levelling and Jobs

The developers have attributed the long-term success of FF11 to its job system and plan to expand this significantly in FF14. The aim is to end up with something completely different but yet achieve the same effect of maintaining lasting appeal to the players.
Instead of leveling via experience, weapons will play a key role. The developers promised there will be no more need to grind XP for levels and they have something new in store.

Game Service

Square Enix has confirmed that PlayOnline will not be used for FF14. This is due to the fact that PlayOnline was originally designed as an all-in-one solution for housing multiple content types, but as FF14 will solely be the game, there is no need to use the PlayOnline service.
Square Enix have revealed that PC and Playstation 3 users will still be able to play with each other and that you will sign in with a universal ID, allowing you to continue your progress on either platform.
Security Tokens (a recent release for FF11) generate a random six digit number upon every login to the PlayOnline service. Without this number it is impossible to login to an account. It has been confirmed that this system will be used to secure Final Fantasy 14 accounts.

Release Date

The game is set to come out in mid-to-late 2010, after the release of FF13 (which is scheduled for spring 2010). Plans for a beta are still in the works but the indications are that FF14 will be given a considerably longer beta period than FF11 (which had one of 3-4 months)

*Camps out at the Beta site*
BACK OFF I GOT THIS!
Throw's a shiny to distract you.
Didn't work? You are still here?
Crap...

Payment Plan

A more versatile payment plan is being considered, based on 30-day payment cycles. This would allow billing to be on a daily instead of monthy cycle and help avoid users paying for unused time. It will also lessen the inconvenience of the regularly scheduled billing maintenance. Importantly it will allow people to register and delete characters at any time, something currently unavailable in Final Fantasy 11.

Nice idea and all but I'm not so sure about you but I really don't wanna check my balance daily to make sure I have enough to play...

Okay, I have shared some of the information and the rest can be read at the link below.
